When you go to your favorite drive thru restaurant you notice your car's A/C almost starts blowing hot air...at least it's not as cold as when you were driving it down the road. What could be the problem?  I will list below several possibilities for you to look into, that can be causing your problem.

1.  Your car's condenser fan may not be working, or at least not correctly.  With the A/C on MAX (car running) open the hood and see if the condenser fan is working.  If not, you have found your problem already.

2.  Your car could be overheating and you are not aware of it.  If your engine is running too hot it will definitely effect the A/C... especially at idle.

3.  If your condenser is clogged with debris, this will cause a decrease in the effectiveness of the Air Conditioning System.  Remember to check between the radiator and condenser for for this Debris as well.

4.  If you are low on refrigerant this can cause a decrease in cooling while at idle.

5.  If the desiccant bag has ruptured in the dryer or accumulator, this will stop the condenser up from the inside, until it can not do it's job.  Lets hope this is not the case for you, because this is a major problem.

6  Finally, your compressor may be worn out and not pumping the refrigerant thru the system as needed.  Again, this is a major problem as well.  So you may want to consult your local Auto A/C Specialists if you have any doubts.

Automotive Struts and Shocks

The most important function of your vehicle's struts and shocks is to help keep the tire in contact with the road.  Without these components the tire would lose contact with the road every time it contacted a bump. Struts and shocks also absorb impacts and smooth out from surface irregularities in the road providing a smooth stable ride. The rate of wear that struts and shocks have is so slow, that over time as their performance deteriorates you may not even notice the change.

Common symptoms of worn struts and shocks include:

Excessive harshness over bumps-  As the tire hits a bump, it is no longer able to absorb the shock of the impact and the impact is transmitted to the passenger compartment.

Excessive nose diving during stops- As the vehicle comes to a stop the struts and shocks are no longer able to control the compression of the suspension system and weight transfers to the front wheels.

Instability in Turns- Similar to Excessive nose diving, the struts and shocks are no longer able to slow the rate of compression of the suspension system.

Excessive Float Over Slight Rises in the Road Surface- The struts and shocks are no longer able to control compression OR rebound of the suspension system and the vehicle seems to "Float" over the road.

Bad Driving Habits Can Cost You Time And Money

Today we are going to talk about the first bad driving habit I have seen towed into my shop. Just recently there was a car towed into my shop that would not start.  I diagnosed the no start problem and determined it was the fuel pump causing the no start condition.  I called the customer up to tell him the news, and while I was taking to the man, I found out what caused his problem.

The customer started bragging he could get over three hundred miles from a tank of fuel and how he never filled up until he was on fumes.  He had done this many times with no problems.

Here is what I told him.  The fuel pump is in the fuel tank, it is a module assembly comprised of more parts than just the pump itself.  The fuel cools and lubricates the pump assembly. when the fuel level gets low (below the pump) it will still pump however it is no longer submerged in the fuel to keep the pump cool, so it overheats. Then you pull into a service station drop 48-52 degree gas in the tank it can put the pump into shock, therefore rendering it useless. The moral of this story is don't let your fuel pump be a casualty because of this bad decision.

When your tank gets below a half tank start thinking about getting fuel.  Never run below 1/4 tank, because your fuel tank has sediment in the bottom that your fuel pump has no choice but to pick up when the fuel level gets low.  This nasty sediment gets into your fuel injection system causing driveability problems, sluggish acceleration, misfires and in some cases real engine damage.  Sure you have a fuel filter, but what happens when that filter gets full of debris  Some modern vehicles have only a filter in the tank that can not be changed.  My recommendation is keep your fuel tank close to half full at all times.  Your car will love you for it.

Automotive Braking Safety Technology

What if I told you...in the future your car would be able to stop on it's own without any help from the driver.  OK, now what if I told you, that technology was here today, and in use on today's automobile.  It's true...many of today's vehicles have the technology to stop by themselves.

What if in the future accidents could be eliminated completely...science fiction?  Hardly.  The first step toward this concept happened many years ago when Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) started showing up on cars.  This technology prevents the wheels from locking up, during a full panic stop, so the driver can maintain steering control .  ABS relies on wheel speed sensors to determine the rate of wheel speed deceleration and uses the data to prevent the wheels from locking up.

The next step in the development of this technology was Traction Control Systems (TCS)  which incorporated ABS and the engine management system to reduce wheel slip during acceleration.  If one of the wheel speed sensors noticed  wheel spin, the engine management system would reduce engine torque by closing the throttle and reducing timing which would allow the spinning wheel to regain traction.

Electronic Stability Control was next.  This technology incorporated several new sensors... including a steering angle sensor, an accelerometer... as well as a yaw rate sensor to monitor the pitch, roll and yaw of the vehicle.

The next advance in the brake system evolution was Predictive  Emergency Braking (PEB). This new system provides automated emergency stopping when unexpected hazards happen.   Radar keeps an eye on the road and can react very quickly if a hazard occurs or the driver becomes distracted. Many of these systems will safely bring the vehicle to a complete stop with no driver input at all. That's where we are today.
